Concrete Moisture Issues Increasingly Prevalent
Flooring Resources Corporation performs tests to determine moisture levels in concrete. We use these tests because most floors are installed on concrete slabs. While the slab may feel dry to the touch, vapor naturally emits from all concrete over time. Too much of this vapor can destroy flooring adhesives and cause floors to fail. Each floor covering manufacturer has specifications to determine acceptable moisture emission rate or the relative humidity reading. Moisture remediation may be required to install a successful floor.
Today’s construction environment is inundated with moisture issues. Over the last twenty years, several factors have combined to create moisture problems in concrete. Today’s construction schedules are “fast-tracked,” often not providing ample drying time for concrete. Newer adhesives were created in compliance with low VOC standards, many of which do not work well in high moisture environments. Concrete formulas have changed by including slag and fly ash in their mixtures. These particles slow curing time.
All of these factors compound into moisture problems becoming increasingly prevalent. For this reason, Flooring Resources tests pH and moisture levels on every project prior to installation. Good communication between all parties can eliminate surprise costs and help plan budgets with moisture prevention in mind.

*Calcium Chloride, while still an approved method, is phasing out with Relative Humidity Testing becoming the standard. Flooring Resources uses Relative Humidity testing to verify moisture levels in concrete prior to installation. Flooring Resources currently uses the Vaisala HMI41 Indicator with HMP44 RH Probes.
